Samer_Tariq_IssawiSamer Issawi’s detention was extended by the occupation Magistrate’s Court in Jerusalem on Sunday, June 29, until Tuesday, July 1, said Jawad Boulos, Palestinian lawyer at the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society. He noted that the occupation prosecutors described Issawi’s statements to the press as “provocative,” and that his public statements were a “violation of his release.”

Issawi engaged in the longest hunger strike in the history of the Palestinian prisoners’ movement, securing his release in December 2013, after occupation forces attempted to re-impose his sentence on him for travelling outside Jerusalem. He had been released in the Wafa al-Ahrar prisoner exchange along with 1026 other Palestinian prisoners in October 2011. Issawi’s case garnered worldwide attention.

Recent occupation assaults on the West Bank have included over 560 arrests, particularly targeting former prisoners, including 52 former prisoners released in the Wafa al-Ahrar agreement, including Issawi.
